Roanoke County Receives VML Innovation Award for Explore Park Adventure Plan

VML Award 2017

The Virginia Municipal League (VML) has awarded Roanoke County with a 2017 Innovation Award in the Economic Development Category for the Explore Park Adventure Plan. A panel of judges felt the plan represented the best in the category by addressing challenges, using local resources efficiently and achieving measurable results. The award was accepted by department director Doug Blount at the VML annual conference in Williamsburg on Monday, October 2.

The Explore Park Adventure Plan outlines a 20-year vision for developing adventure recreation amenities at the park through public-private partnerships. It was a result of a year long effort including an extensive public input phase and unique business plan component. This plan has already been instrumental in helping attract new businesses to build at the park.

The Virginia Municipal League is a statewide, nonprofit, nonpartisan association of city, town and county governments established in 1905 to improve and assist local governments through legislative advocacy, research, education and other services. Membership consists of 38 cities, 160 towns and eight counties throughout the Commonwealth. Only six innovation awards are presented each year in the categories of Community Health, Infrastructure, Economic Development, Public Safety, Working With Youth and Communications.
